Alice Walker Everyday Use
The knowledge we attain on the mother of a story concordant to expressions of the narrator, is a well-built woman with commanding physical presence that she trusts so extensively even to articulate of it as bold enough to carry equivalent levels of manifestation as that of a male. She carries no striking rudeness to her demeanor, hence not too polite either, puts out her words and sentences in considerable brevity as being straight her point, so as to achieve particular level of responsive precision and maintaining it, easy to misinterpret her responses and collective handling of situations for what they are not.
I personally cannot establish satisfactory levels of reliability on the narrator, or simply put she is of an unreliable kind. First, she draws out all her pieces formulating her entire writing in fashion and nature that contains complexity, so as to not be easily understood and figured out who is who, who does what, who relates to whom how, making a story difficult to grasp and run through with its context as set out by her style of storytelling. Take for instance, speaking of Maggie showing off her outfit, then to Dee being a woman and then quite hastily jumping to the house that had burned back in time.
Narratives carries no real characteristics of irrelevance hence rouses such impression particularly when close attention is not carefully exercised by reader eager to digest it. The house that had burned entails a situation that prevailed during Maggie and Dee’s tender years but connection of syntax to it feels too dry to joyously absorb and sense a smooth flowing passage to immerse self in hunger for the very next passage of narration.
The assumptions she has on both Maggie and Dee are quite varied and of course I would not disagree with her on that. Maggie is seen as still pretty much rising than grown, with that being slightly evinced by fact that she still could not entirely rely on abilities of her own to dress and style up her body desirably, so she would dutifully solicit external confirmation before perhaps she could hit the open environment for everyone to take note of her cosmetic configuration.
Dee on the other hand is much bold and self- assured, loving finer things and believing in her confidence to identifying and make solid use of them. Even not afraid to try out color combinations she have not took note of before. On relations with Maggie she may have not always exercised fully fledged wave of sense of humor, in how she had perhaps conducted the atmosphere in between them from time to time or situation to another, raising suspicion initially that she may not always been too kind to Maggie, however the dust of confusion in that regard proved all otherwise.
Had the story been told from Dee’s perspective it would be a contradicting affair considering the level of bitterness she tends to discharge at times, even to commit to extreme utterances such as “Dee is dead”, that is bitter if not harsh to express very least on it. Perhaps Mama rumbling on about her having though Dee has become a much better soul than she had anticipated was merely a wishful thinking, because after all Dee is not what she puts her out to be.
Mama then offered the quilt to Maggie somewhat in disapproval of Dee’s mannerism. The heritage Dee hasn’t understood was how her humor would make a better person out of her, as for Walker’s ultimate purpose, is mending ties between Maggie and Dee, and facilitate working understanding in between. And the theme of everyday use is maintaining what best there can be with respect to amicability.
